By Zoila Palma: On July 9, Major General Julian C. Cheater of the United States Southern Command visited Belize to bolster regional security ties and reinforce the longstanding military partnership between the U.S. and Belize.
During his visit, Major General Cheater met with Brigadier General Asariel Loria and Colonel Anthony Velasquez to discuss deepening defense cooperation.
Key topics included enhancing military interoperability, strengthening bilateral defense relations, and supporting initiatives to build the Belize Defence Force’s capacity.
The high-level discussions also addressed shared security challenges such as drug trafficking, transnational crime, and regional instability. The visit emphasized the U.S. commitment to supporting Belize in disaster response, humanitarian assistance, and military training.
Part of a broader U.S. strategy to promote regional security in the Western Hemisphere, the visit reaffirmed both nations’ dedication to a strong, collaborative defense relationship that enhances operational readiness and resilience across Central America.
