By Zoila Palma:  CARICOM Heads of Government have reaffirmed their unwavering support for Haiti, pledging continued regional cooperation to help restore security, strengthen democratic institutions, and return the country to constitutional governance.

The commitment was outlined in a statement issued on the margins of the Fifty-First Regular Meeting of the Conference of Heads of Government of the Caribbean Community (CARICOM), held in Saint Lucia.

In the statement, CARICOM said it “reaffirm[s] their unwavering solidarity with the people of Haiti and their continued commitment to supporting Haiti’s efforts to restore security, strengthen democratic institutions, and return to constitutional governance.”

The leaders also welcomed the efforts of the Haitian government under Prime Minister Alix Didier Fils-Aimé, noting progress in strengthening national security, advancing the electoral process, and laying the foundation for “free, credible, inclusive and peaceful elections.”

CARICOM emphasized that completing Haiti’s current transition is critical to allowing its citizens to democratically elect their leaders.

CARICOM said it “reaffirms its support for strengthening Haiti’s national security institutions and calls for the full deployment and renewal of the mandate of the Gang Suppression Force (GSF),” stressing that Haiti’s security is closely linked to the stability of the wider Caribbean.

CARICOM also pledged to continue working alongside Haitian authorities, the United Nations, the Organization of American States, and other international partners to address the country’s ongoing challenges.

Expressing optimism about Haiti’s future, CARICOM said it “remains confident that, through sustained national commitment and continued regional and international support, Haiti will achieve a secure, stable and democratic future for the benefit of its people and the Caribbean Community as a whole.”
