By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: The U.S. Embassy Belize noted that the U.S. Department of Agriculture has an ongoing partnership with the Belize Agricultural Health Authority (BAHA) for top-notch management of the Mediterranean fruit fly (Medfly).
The Medfly is one of the world’s most destructive agricultural pests.
“Together, we’re fortifying barriers against the transport of this invasive fruit pest, promoting sustainable agriculture, and protecting agricultural production in the region,” the U.S. Embassy noted.
To ensure a Medfly-free Belize and safeguard agriculture in the region, the team continues to monitor Medfly via traps and transport of host fruits.
In addition, BAHA and the U.S. Department of Agriculture are collaborating for future renovations at the Jalacte facility.
