By Rubén Morales Iglesias: The Dangriga Cycling Association and the National Garifuna Council have decided to reroute the Annual TV (Thomas Vincent) Ramos Cycling Classic 2024, which will be held on Sunday, November 17, 2024, from the Southern Highway to the Hummingbird Highway.
Organizer Moses Lopez said he was advised to reroute the race due to reconstruction work being done on the Southern Highway, starting at the Six-Mile Junction and heading south towards the Placencia Junction.
Although they haven’t received the official approval from the Cycling Federation of Belize, Lopez said the plan is for the Men’s Elite race to begin at 10:00 am at K’s Bar in Dangriga, covering 66 miles to Mile 34 and back. Junior riders would pedal to Mile 20 and back for a total of 38 miles. Women cyclists, depending on the number of categories, would ride to Miles 20 and 25 and back. He mentioned that he hasn’t received word yet on the distance the Weekend Warriors and Gons Category C cyclists would like to ride. However, since their distance when the race on the Southern Highway is 56 miles, they would ride from Dangriga to approximately Mile 30.
Lopez said he expects between 80 to 100 riders for the race.
Participants will compete for over $6,000 in prizes, including $1,000 in station prizes, which will be awarded to the top finishers in the Elite, Junior, Women, and Weekend Warriors’ and Gons’ A, B, and C categories. The winners of the six categories will be awarded trophies depicting the Drums of Our Fathers Monument.
