By Aaron Humes: Multiple houses, occupied by as many as thirteen families, were destroyed in a fire engulfing the village of San Pedro Columbia, Toledo District this afternoon.
As of this evening, the fire is reportedly under control. It was fought by national emergency management agencies, including the National Fire Service, Belize Defence Force (BDF), Ya’axche Conservation Trust (YCT) and local emergency response teams. The Toledo Emergency Operations Center has been partially activated to assess urgent needs and mobilize support for displaced village residents.
Preliminary reports suggest that the fire started in a kitchen area in one of the homes on the south side of the village, mostly thatch structures, and strong winds pushed it along, engulfing nearby houses in minutes. Village chair Abner Cal told LOVE FM that the fire affected houses in a quarter-mile radius, moving with such speed that most affected barely had time to grab valuables before escaping; nonetheless, no injuries or fatalities have been reported so far.
An assessment of damages is pending.
