By Aaron Humes: The Toledo Institute for Development and Environment (TIDE) proudly announces that it was one of the recipients of the Belize Fund for Sustainable Future (BFSF) Grants Awards Program (GAP) for 2023-2024 for its work in the District.

TIDE’s grant is for $696,598.34 for a project entitled “Protection and Conservation of Commercial Species and Fish Spawning Aggregation (FSA) Sites in Sapodilla Cayes Marine Reserve (SCMR).” This project has the goal to enhance protection and biodiversity conservation of commercial species and legally established FSAs within SCMR including the Elbow and Cayman Crown site.

TIDE will be working with its community research team of men and women from Punta Negra and Punta Gorda Town. The project is expected to impact inhabitants of the towns and communities of South Stann Creek and Toledo Districts from Placencia and Independence to Monkey River, Punta Negra and Punta Gorda, with direct impact to 120 commercial fishers, 100 recreational, 20 subsistence fishers, 40 tour guides, and 15 tour operators who depend on the resources within its boundaries.
