The one thing Belizeans have that billions do not

By Horace Palacio: The greatest thing Belizeans possess is not the reef. It is not the blue waters, the islands, the jungles, or even the land itself. The greatest thing Belizeans possess is freedom. The tragedy is that many do not fully appreciate it.

Freedom is one of those things people rarely value until it is gone. It is like oxygen in that nobody thinks about it when they have it. Everybody thinks about it when they lose it. History is filled with examples of nations that learned this lesson the hard way.

Belizeans wake up every morning with freedoms that billions of people around the world can only dream about. We can criticize our government, start businesses, worship freely, travel, vote, and speak our minds. We can openly disagree with politicians without fearing a knock on the door in the middle of the night. Many people around the world cannot do the same.

Look at North Korea. Citizens cannot openly criticize the government without severe consequences. Independent media is virtually nonexistent, and the state controls what information people receive. Entire families can be punished for the actions or words of one individual.

Imagine living in a country where a social media post could cost you your freedom. Imagine being unable to question leaders or debate public policy. Imagine not being allowed to choose what information you consume. For millions of people, this is not imagination; it is reality.

Belizeans criticize politicians every day. Some criticize the Prime Minister, while others criticize the Opposition. Journalists challenge ministers, and citizens debate issues openly. That freedom is worth more than many Belizeans realize.

Look at Cuba. For decades, economic restrictions and government controls have limited opportunities for ordinary citizens. Many talented Cubans dream of economic opportunities that Belizeans often take for granted. Some have risked their lives crossing dangerous waters in search of freedom and opportunity.

Look at Venezuela. Once one of the wealthiest countries in Latin America, it suffered economic collapse, hyperinflation, and political instability. Millions of citizens watched their savings disappear and their quality of life deteriorate. Many were forced to leave their homeland in search of survival.

Freedom is not only political. Freedom is also economic. A Belizean can wake up tomorrow and decide to start a business, launch a website, open a store, or create a new product. Success is not guaranteed, but the opportunity exists.

Many people around the world do not have that opportunity. Excessive government control, corruption, or economic restrictions often make entrepreneurship nearly impossible. Belizeans frequently overlook how valuable economic freedom truly is. It is one of the foundations of prosperity.

The problem is that many Belizeans confuse freedom with entitlement. Freedom does not guarantee success, wealth, or happiness. Freedom only guarantees the opportunity to pursue those things. The outcome still depends on individual effort and responsibility.

Too often, people blame politicians, employers, or circumstances for every challenge they face. Some wait for government to solve problems that only they can solve themselves. Others believe freedom means being entitled to outcomes rather than opportunities. That mindset weakens both individuals and nations.

True freedom comes with responsibility. Freedom means you are free to succeed, but also free to fail. You are free to build, but also free to make mistakes. Nobody is obligated to achieve your dreams for you.

There are many advantages to freedom. Freedom creates innovation, entrepreneurship, creativity, and progress. It allows citizens to challenge authority, think independently, and build better futures. Most of the world’s greatest achievements emerged in societies where people had the freedom to experiment and create.

But freedom also has costs. Freedom requires self-discipline, accountability, and personal responsibility. It allows people to make poor choices as well as good ones. Not everyone is comfortable carrying that burden.

Many people throughout history have traded freedom for promises of security. Authoritarian governments often rise by claiming they can solve all problems. Citizens are told that giving up some liberty is necessary for safety or stability. Over time, freedom disappears piece by piece.

History shows how dangerous that path can become. Every dictatorship begins with promises. Every authoritarian leader claims to know what is best for the people. By the time citizens realize what they have lost, it is often too late.

The founders of Belize understood something important. Freedom is fragile and must be protected. It can be lost much faster than people think. Once lost, it is often extremely difficult to regain.

Every year Belizeans celebrate Independence Day. We wave flags, attend parades, and wear patriotic colors. Those celebrations are important because they remind us of our national identity. But true patriotism requires more than ceremonies.

Patriotism means understanding the sacrifices that made freedom possible. Belize’s journey to independence required leadership, courage, diplomacy, and determination. Many people worked tirelessly to secure a future where Belizeans could govern themselves. The freedoms we enjoy today were not handed to us without effort.

The question is whether modern Belizeans truly appreciate what they inherited. Too often, the answer appears to be no. Many focus on what is wrong while forgetting what is right. Many complain about their freedoms without recognizing how rare those freedoms are globally.

Freedom is not free. It requires vigilance, responsibility, and citizens willing to defend it. It requires people who understand that liberty can disappear if it is neglected. Every generation has a duty to protect it for the next.

The next time you criticize a politician, post your opinion online, vote in an election, start a business, or speak your mind openly, remember something important. Billions of people on this planet cannot do those things. You can.

That is the true value of freedom. It is not measured in dollars, land, or material possessions. It is measured in opportunities, choices, and human dignity. Belizeans should cherish it before they are forced to learn its value the hard way.
