By Rubén Morales Iglesias: Belize-bound with silver medals in tow, the Belize Men’s National Volleyball Team are officially back on the road, having successfully passed through the teachers’ blockade in Guatemala just before midday on Monday.
Confirmation from the Belize Volleyball Association
Allan Sharp, President of the Belize Volleyball Association, confirmed the development.
“The team just passed through the blockade location,” Sharp said, adding that the Belize Embassy in Guatemala had been notified early about the plight of the national squad, ensuring diplomatic awareness as the volleyball team remained stranded for hours.
A Familiar Challenge
Sharp noted that such delays aren’t entirely new.
“Some time ago, we experienced a similar delay when traveling through Guatemala,” he said. The current blockade, triggered by a nationwide teachers’ strike organized by the Guatemala Education Workers Union (Sindicato de Trabajadores de la Educación de Guatemala -STEG), similar to the Belize National Teachers Union, has led to widespread disruptions across major highways in the neighbouring country.
Blockade Lifted – Border Remains Open
Earlier concerns about a possible closure at the Melchor de Mencos border crossing were later dispelled, with reports indicating the border remained open throughout the morning. That development will help smooth the way for Team Belize, whose route back to Belize had initially looked uncertain.
From Protest to Progress
Team Belize had departed El Salvador around midnight following a stellar silver-medal finish at the 2nd AFECAVOL Final 4 Men’s Volleyball Championship. Their return, which had slowed to a halt on a Guatemalan “Ruta al Atlántico” highway that leads to Belize, due to the protest, now continues with renewed momentum.
After showing grit and grace on the court in San Salvador, Team Belize’s endurance is again on display—this time off the court. The team should arrive in Benque Viejo del Carmen later on Monday.
