By Breaking Belize News Staff (HP): A San Pedro taxi driver waiting for a fare ended up in the sea, knocked off his feet by a blow from a man he says he had never seen in his life, and a suspect has now been formally charged with harm.

According to the Belize Police Department, the 27-year-old taxi driver of the San Pedrito Area reported that on Saturday, July 18, 2026, at about 3:15 p.m., he was waiting for an arrival at the entrance of a pier on the beachfront of San Pedro Town when a man approached him from behind and said, “Don’t touch none of my family.”

The taxi driver told police he replied, “I don’t know you,” and continued standing with his back turned. Moments later, he reported, he felt a hard blow to the right side of his head, causing him to lose his balance and fall into the sea.

The ordeal did not end in the water. After getting back to his feet, the man stated, the same attacker approached again and punched him once to the upper chest, causing pain. Bystanders in the area then restrained the attacker, who, according to the report, appeared to be searching for an object to strike him with again.

The complainant told police it was broad daylight with clear weather and an unobstructed view, and that although he had never seen the man before, he could positively identify him after the roughly ten minutes the incident lasted. He was observed with scratches and bruising to his upper chest and complained of head pain, and a doctor certified his injuries as harm.

Police detained a man in connection with the report, and on Tuesday, July 21, formally arrested and charged 27-year-old Ian Earson Young Sr. of the DFC Area, San Pedro Town, with the crime of harm. Cautioned after the charge, he chose to remain silent.
