By Rubén Morales Iglesias: As part of its ongoing commitment to strengthen Belize’s apiculture sector, the Ministry of Agriculture, Food Security, and Enterprise (MAFSE) has launched a three-day field mission in the Toledo District aimed at enhancing beekeeping practices and improving colony health.

Led by Beekeeping Unit technicians Miguel Huertas and Jesse Madrid, alongside Toledo-based officers Edgar Tuyud and Andy Che, the mission focuses on delivering hands-on technical support to local beekeepers through direct apiary visits and practical demonstrations.

Colony Health Assessments in Action
On Wednesday, July 2, the technical team conducted detailed colony inspections across several apiaries. These assessments included:

  • Evaluating brood patterns to gauge colony development
  • Confirming queen presence and productivity
  • Identifying signs of pests, diseases, or stress factors

These evaluations are essential for early detection and timely intervention, helping beekeepers maintain strong, productive hives.

Feeding Strategies for Seasonal Challenges
A key component of the training was a live demonstration on supplemental feeding techniques. Beekeepers were taught to:

  • Mix a 1:1 sugar-to-water syrup to stimulate brood rearing
  • Prepare a 2:1 syrup to support food reserves during periods of low forage
  • Create protein patties as a pollen substitute during the dearth period (July–November)

These feeding strategies are critical for sustaining colony strength during times when natural nectar and pollen sources are scarce.

Combatting Varroa Mites with Precision Tools
The session also introduced participants to Integrated Pest Management (IPM) techniques, with a focus on varroa mite monitoring. The team demonstrated the alcohol wash method—a reliable diagnostic tool that involves:

  • Collecting a sample of bees
  • Immersing them in alcohol to dislodge mites
  • Counting mites to determine infestation levels

Beekeepers were trained to interpret results, with a 2–3% mite load identified as the threshold for treatment.

Empowering Beekeepers for Sustainability
These technical interventions are part of a broader national strategy to build capacity among Belizean beekeepers. By equipping them with practical tools and knowledge, MAFSE aims to promote proactive colony management and ensure the long-term sustainability of honeybee populations.

The field mission continues through the week, reinforcing the Ministry’s commitment to supporting rural livelihoods and strengthening Belize’s agricultural resilience.
