By Zoila Palma: The FBI and its law enforcement partners have disrupted an alleged plot targeting this weekend’s UFC Freedom 250 event in Washington, D.C., leading to the arrest of five individuals.
According to officials, investigators identified a network of 23 people allegedly involved in planning an attack that included the use of explosive-laden drones near the event venue, Fox reports.
Authorities said the alleged plan involved striking buildings close to the event with drones carrying explosives, triggering a mass evacuation and directing fleeing crowds toward a pre-positioned sniper team. Officials further alleged that a second phase of the operation involved storming the gates of the White House. The FBI first became aware of the threat on June 10 and quickly coordinated with law enforcement agencies to investigate and secure arrests.
One of the suspects, identified in court documents as 19-year-old Tycen Proper of Cincinnati, allegedly spent about $3,000 on firearms, ammunition and tactical equipment. Investigators said Proper’s parents became concerned about his recent activities, with his mother alerting authorities about firearm purchases and online communications. His family later voluntarily surrendered weapons, ammunition and other equipment to law enforcement.
Additional arrests were made in California, Missouri and Nebraska. Prosecutors allege that Abraham Hermosillo Alvarez, who allegedly used the online alias “Shepherd,” served as a key organizer, coordinating staging locations, drone positions, sniper placements and escape routes through Signal messaging chats. Officials said all those arrested are American citizens and that no foreign involvement has been identified.
The U.S. Secret Service confirmed it worked closely with the FBI throughout the investigation.
