Statistical Institute of Belize reports that multidimensional poverty continues to fall

By Aaron Humes: The Statistical Institute of Belize (SIB) measures marginally fewer persons considered “multidimensional poverty” – being deprived of key indicators such as health, education, and employment.

76,779 persons in 17,753 households are considered multidimensionally poor, down from 89,000 and 20,562 in 2024 respectively. National incidence of poverty is 19.8 percent and intensity slipped to 37.8 percent.

The SIB measures highest incidence of poverty in Toledo, but Stann Creek was the sole district to record an increase in intensity of poverty.

The main contributions to lower MPI came from increased access to internet and information communication and technology, food security and fewer youths not in education, employment or training (NEET).

The Multidimensional Poverty Index (MPI) includes both direct and indirect measures of poverty, the latter including food security, health, education, living standards, and employment, equally weighted. The additional questions were asked during the Labour Force Survey conducted in September 2025. The final figures are measured between 0 and 1, where the higher figures indicate a greater level of multidimensional poverty – if the figure is greater than 0.25 it would be considered multidimensionally poor. The MPI multiplies the incidence and intensity of Multidimensional poverty.
