Southside youth remanded for unlicensed firearm possession

By Breaking Belize News Staff:  Kelvin Brian Willis, a 24-year-old mechanic from Belize City, is on remand at the Belize Central Prison tonight after being caught in possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition.

Late on Monday evening, police escorted Willis to Belize City Magistrate’s Court where he was arraigned before a Senior Magistrate in Court #3. Willis, unrepresented, pleaded not guilty to charges of possessing a firearm without a license and possession of unlicensed ammunition.

The incident took place on Saturday, April 20, 2024, around 9:52 p.m. Police Officers Reynaldo Bil and Kirklin Flowers were conducting a patrol on North Front Street when they noticed Willis acting suspiciously. As the police approached him, Willis attempted to walk away.

PC Bol followed him and identified himself as a police officer. However, Willis refused to stop and walked under a fence. PC Bol observed what appeared to be a firearm in Willis’ hand. Willis allegedly said, “Boss dah only wa lee bit ah weed I throw away,” before attempting to dispose of the object.

Despite finding nothing on Willis during an initial search, PC Bol conducted a thorough search of the area where Willis was seen discarding the object. This led to the discovery of a 9mm pistol with 14 live rounds of ammunition.

Due to the serious nature of the offenses, bail was denied to Willis. He was remanded into custody at Belize Central Prison until June 27, 2024, for disclosure in the matter. Willis has the option to apply for bail at the High Court.
