By Zoila Palma: On February 5, 2026, the Solid Waste Management Project II (SWMP II) officially concluded at the Grand Resort & Residences in Belize City.
The project marked a significant milestone in Belize’s continued journey toward a more sustainable, resilient, and well-coordinated solid waste management sector.
The workshop featured remarks by Milagro Matus, CEO of the Ministry of Sustainable Development, Climate Change and Solid Waste Management, who underscored the national importance of SWMP II and reaffirmed Government’s commitment to strengthening waste management systems across the country through collaboration, innovation, and long-term planning.
SWMP II stands as a successful and transformative project, delivering tangible results through improved infrastructure, strengthened institutional capacity, enhanced coordination with municipal governments, and a more strategic, data-driven approach to sector planning.
The project clearly demonstrated the power of partnership bringing together national agencies, municipal councils, development partners, consultants, and other key stakeholders around a shared vision for sustainable waste management in Belize.

Kenneth Williams, Acting Director, Belize Solid Waste Management Authority overview of SWMP II achievements
Javier Grau, Project Team Leader, Inter-American Development Bank – sector sustainability and IDB support
Lourdes Alvarez – Development Effectiveness and Evaluation Results
Soledad Villarroel – presentation of the ICOAST Project, the next step in scaling up national waste management efforts
“As SWMP II concludes, the transition to ICOAST signals a bold move forward building on proven successes, expanding national impact, and integrating climate resilience and innovation into Belize’s waste management framework. The open discussion highlighted a strong, shared commitment among stakeholders to continuous improvement and long-term sustainability,” Belize Solid Waste Management Authority said.
The program was expertly guided by Tyronne Chimilio, Public Relations Officer, Belize Solid Waste Management Authority, who served as Master of Ceremonies, ensuring a smooth, engaging, and reflective close to this landmark project.
Gratitude was extended to Alfredo Rihm, Lead Specialist, IDB; Jorge Nabet, Financial Specialist; and Lynn Tucker, Project Assistant, for their long-standing contributions to the successful execution of SWMP I and SWMP II.
