Siblings at war – Brother is charged with harming his sister during a family dispute over whose turn it was to use kitchen sink

By Aaron Humes: Ladyville resident Angel Gutierrez on Friday was brought before the Magistrate’s Court on a charge of harm following a dispute over the kitchen sink in the family home at Marage Road.

According to Cheyli Gutierrez, on January 3 she was preparing food at the kitchen sink when Angel walked in and moved the faucet away from the sink. They began to argue as she told him to wait, but she says he stared her down and then began choking her around the neck, leaving bruises that were classified as harm.

Angel Gutierrez initially offered a guilty plea, saying she was trying to humiliate him and he got tired of it so he did not feel did anything particularly wrong.

After the facts of the case were read out in court, Gutierrez changed his mind, asking whether a conviction would affect his application for a visa to leave the country. The presiding Magistrate said it was up to him and so he changed his plea to not guilty, ensuring the case would be tried in full.

Gutierrez was offered and met bail of $600 and a surety and returns to court on March 5.
