By Aaron Humes: While the country is grateful for the lowest murder count it has seen in more than a decade and a half, there are reminders around every corner that the bad old days are not far away.

Sometime between January 7 and 8, 2013, Keino Quallo, Albert Fuentes, Anthony Perez and Leonard Myers were viciously murdered at their shared residence at the corner of Dean and Plues Street, a block from the site of Police Precinct One office today and not far from the former substation in the area.

From the start, residents of the area claimed it was police who either committed or facilitated the murders and the finger of blame was particularly pointed at the Gang Suppression Unit (GSU) and its then-Commander Marco Vidal. Vidal appeared with Prime Minister Dean Barrow and then-Commissioner of Police Allen Whylie (he was just about to take office) at a press conference where he publicly denied involvement. Other reports suggest it may have been internal gang rivalry to blame, especially considering that the building is in the territory of the notorious George Street Gang.

Fueled mainly by social media, rumors and innuendo brought the City to a standstill, but the killer(s) have yet to be found.

Vidal was ultimately drummed out of the Department in disgrace following supervisory failures as Commander of Operations. In a coincidence, now-former Corporal of Police Elmer Nah, his nephew and former teammate, stands accused of a triple murder in Belmopan, that of Jon and David Ramnarace and Vivian Belisle Ramnarace, who are reported relatives of victim Keino Quallo. Another coincidence is that the father of Keino Quallo and current Minister of Home Affairs Kareem Musa’s father, former Prime Minister Said Musa, were once law partners.

So far as we are aware there does not exist any sort of Cold Case Unit to revive investigations into incidents such as these – though the Police Department does not announce files as being closed in cases unless there are arrests and/or convictions.

The families of Quallo, Perez, Fuentes, Myers, the Ramnaraces, and many others continue to wait for justice.
