By Rubén Morales Iglesias: Sergio Chuc will be reelected as president of the Football Federation of Belize (FFB) on Saturday at the FFB’s XVIII Ordinary Congress as he is the only candidate for the presidency of the FFB. Chuc will serve four more years at the helm of the biggest sports association in the country unless he doesn’t garner 51 percent of the votes.

The other incumbents will be challenged for their spots in the FFB’s Executive body.

Onan McLean and Rafael Avila have been approved by the Electoral Committee to challenge Cruz Gamez for the post of Vice President.

Georgina ‘Gina’ Zabaneh will be challenging incumbent Jacqueline Pelayo for the post of Woman Member of the Executive Committee.

Ian Jones is running for the post of ordinary member of the Executive along with incumbents Marlon Kuylen and Shane Orio.

The FFB Executive Committee comprises the President, the Vice President, the Woman Member, and two ordinary Members.

FFB Secretary General Earl Jones said the Electoral Committee headed by attorney Dave Cayetano approved all nine candidates who put up their names for the elections, which are held every four years.

The FFB Executive elections will be held at 10:30 am at Cahal Pech Village Resort in San Ignacio during the FFB’s XVIII Ordinary Congress which gets underway at 9:00 am.

Chuc has to get 51 % of the votes or more to be reelected to the Presidency. That translates to ten of 19 votes. Should Chuc not get the required number of votes, the Concacaf representative would proceed to name an interim president.

The FFB Executive normally has 21 voting members, two from each of the seven football district associations, including Belmopan which is separate from Cayo, and seven from the Premier League of Belize. Currently, however, the Toledo District Football Association is not eligible to vote as its Association was intervened by the FFB two years ago and is still being run by a Normalizing Committee. Secretary General Jones said Normalizing Committees don’t have a right to vote.

According to the FFB Statutes, the election for Vice President will go to two rounds. One of the three candidates will be eliminated after the first round and the two with the highest numbers of votes will compete for the position in a second round.

The Woman Executive Members and the two ordinary Executive are decided in one round of voting.

Secretary General Jones said the secret ballot elections will be conducted by the Electoral Committee which will be assisted by retired Elections and Boundaries Department polling clerk Manuel Matus and supervised by Justice of the Peace and former Head of the Referees Amalio Briceño.

The Elections will be scrutinized by National Sports Council representative Mike Sosa and Belize Olympic and Commonwealth Games Association Secretary General Hilly Martinez.

The elections will be overseen by Mario Monterrosa, Secretary General of the Central American Football Union (UNCAF) and Director for Member Associations of CONCACAF.
