By Breaking Belize News Staff (HP): Thursday’s Senate sitting got so heated that Senate President Carolyn Sandiford had to suspend it.
It started when UDP Senator Sheena Pitts described PUP Senator Hector Guerra as “slow.” The remark was not part of her formal contribution, but it was picked up by the microphone and heard by members in the chamber.
Pitts said the comment was made “all in jest,” but Guerra was not amused.
“Madam President, those statements are really unnecessary. And for the record, the only thing that is slow is Senator’s sense of style,” Guerra said.
Pitts responded, “So, now we the get personal?”
Sandiford urged senators to remember they were in the upper house of parliament, where debate is supposed to be reasoned and sober.
Pitts then called on Guerra to retract his statement and apologize on the record, saying she had not breached Standing Order 64 on the microphone the way he had.
When asked by the Senate President, Guerra declined to retract.
“I will just say, Madam President, that respect must be reciprocated,” he said.
The sitting was later suspended.
