By Breaking Belize News Staff: A 40-year-old Head Supervisor and Security Guard with Priority Security is on remand at the Belize Central Prison after allegedly discharging a licensed work firearm in public during what he claims was an attempt to defend his home.
The accused, Akeem Elijah Tench of a Vernon Street address appeared unrepresented before Magistrate Ludlow Black on Monday morning, where he was read two criminal charges: kept firearm without a gun license and discharging a firearm in public.
The incident occurred around 12:10 a.m. on Sunday, May 4, when police responded to reports of gunfire near New Asia Restaurant on Vernon Street. Officers say they found Tench behind a house in a yard at the same address. A search led to the discovery of a black Glock 17 9mm pistol, serial number PCV105, with an empty magazine. Eight expended shells were recovered from the scene.
Tench pleaded guilty with explanation, stating he was on duty when he received a distress call from his daughter reporting intruders at their home. He said upon arrival, he saw two men fleeing the scene and fired shots to scare them off. He explained that the firearm belonged to his security company and was authorized for use only while on duty.
Magistrate Black questioned whether Tench had permission to carry the firearm outside of work premises. Tench insisted he attempted to explain the situation to officers, but they refused to listen. The court learned no formal statement had yet been provided by Tench’s employer to verify his claims.
Due to the serious nature of the charges, the magistrate could not offer bail and ordered Tench remanded to prison until his next court appearance on May 12, 2025. He was also instructed to provide all relevant documentation at that time.
Visibly distraught, Tench told the court he is the sole provider for his wife and daughter, emphasizing that his actions were to protect his family.
The investigation continues as authorities work to confirm details of the incident and the validity of Tench’s explanation.
