By Aaron Humes: A security guard must have thought she hit the jackpot when $47,935.45 was deposited into her bank account, however, as it turns out, crime doesn’t pay even if it wasn’t your fault.

She should have verified where the money came from, because as it turned out it was the property of the Government Lotteries managed by Nando’s Wholesale. It was intended for a sub-agent to collect.

As a result, 32-year-old Kamera Kathleen Belisle of Mahogany Street Extension, Belize City has been charged with the indictable offense of dishonestly retaining a wrongful credit.

No plea was taken in court as the case will be tried on indictment at the High Court following a preliminary inquiry. Belisle was offered and met bail of $6,000. She is prohibited from applying for a new passport or other travel document, leaving the country without the court’s permission, or contacting any witnesses. She must report to the Mahogany Street Police Station every Friday starting April 26. Belisle’s next court date is set for June 24.

The accountant for Nando’s Wholesale LLP, Sales Agent for the Belize Government Lotteries, reported to police on March 20 that on March 8, he had transferred the sum of $47,935.45 to a Belize Bank account which he believed to be that of Bi Yun Chen, proprietor of Lowe’s Supermarket, a sub-agent for the lottery.

On March 16, he was called by a sales representative at Nando’s inquiring as to why the payment to Lowe’s had not been sent.

Proof of payment was sent to the Sales Representative who promptly informed that the Belize Bank account number was wrong and belonged to someone else.

Police investigators requested the Financial Intelligence Unit (FIU) to ascertain who the account belonged to. On April 12, they sent back information on the account whereupon police arrested Belisle and detained her at the Ladyville Police Station. She reportedly refused to participate in an interview after being cautioned and informed of the alleged offense committed.
