By Rubén Morales Iglesias: The New World Screwworm outbreak in Belize has reached alarming new heights, with the Belize Agricultural Health Authority (BAHA) confirming a total of 527 cases nationwide. The majority of infestations—268 cases—have been found in dogs, marking a dramatic shift. Prior to this, cattle bore the brunt of the parasitic threat.

The Toledo District remains the epicenter of the crisis, now accounting for 264 confirmed cases, nearly half the national total. Cayo District follows with 173, while other districts report lower but still concerning numbers: Orange Walk (67), Stann Creek (66), Belize (65), and Corozal (60).

🦠 The parasite, Cochliomyia hominivorax, commonly known as the New World Screwworm, lays eggs in open wounds. Its larvae feed on healthy, living tissue, causing severe pain, disfigurement, and often death if untreated. According to BAHA and the Ministry of Health and Wellness, two human cases have now been confirmed.

📊 Species breakdown from BAHA’s Week 36 dashboard shows:

  • Canine: 268 cases (50.85%)
  • Bovine: 121 cases
  • Porcine: 69 cases
  • Equine: 26 cases
  • Ovine: 20 cases
  • Exotic/Wildlife (Howler monkey): 14 cases
  • Feline: 7 cases
  • Human: 2 cases

The parasite’s reach spans all regions, with southern Belize reporting the highest concentration. Wildlife is increasingly affected, including a howler monkey found with its face eaten down to the bone.

🔍 Regional data shows: Week 36

Canine: Central 104, North 71, South 93 — Total 268

Bovine: Central 19, North 39, South 63 — Total 121

Porcine: Central 18, North 26, South 25 — Total 69

Equine: Central 6, North 12, South 8 — Total 26

Ovine: Central 4, North 8, South 8 — Total 20

Howler Monkey: Central 0, North 0, South 14 — Total 14

Feline: Central 2, North 2, South 3 — Total 7

Human: Central 0, North 2, South 0 — Total 2

Last month, the Cayo Animal Welfare Society (CAWS) sounded the alarm, citing recent cases in Succotz and Mosquitoville where dogs were euthanized due to severe screwworm infestation. CAWS warns that even minor wounds—tick bites, ear infections, or flea allergies—can become lethal entry points.

🛑 BAHA and CAWS urge immediate action:

  • Apply monthly antiparasitic treatments
  • Keep wounds clean and covered
  • Keep injured animals indoors until fully healed
  • Monitor pets daily for signs of infestation
  • Contact BAHA or a licensed veterinarian for treatment

Treatment includes manual removal of larvae, insecticidal medication, and antibiotics. CAWS warns against home remedies like burnt oil or vinegar, which are ineffective and dangerous.

BAHA continues nationwide surveillance and calls on communities to report suspected cases. With the parasite now affecting pets, livestock, wildlife, and humans, vigilance is not optional—it’s lifesaving.
