By Aaron Humes: A 21-year-old San Pedro Town resident, John Augustine Reyes, has been fined $1,500 after being caught with 17.2 grams of cannabis. This hefty penalty, despite the relatively small quantity, comes in response to the escalating drug issues on the island.
Reyes faced a single charge of possession of a controlled substance when he appeared before a Magistrate in the San Pedro Magistrate’s Court. As a first-time offender, Reyes was previously convicted of burglary and had accumulated a debt of $1,500 to the court.
During his court appearance, Reyes sought clarity on the potential penalties for his offence. The Magistrate informed him that he was looking at a non-custodial sentence, leading him to plead guilty. He has been given until September 6 to settle his dues, with the warning that failure to do so would result in a six-month prison sentence.
Reyes was apprehended on February 13, after being found with the cannabis in the Boca Del Rio area. The court’s decision reflects the authorities’ commitment to combating the surge of drug-related activities on the island, a trend that has become increasingly concerning for community members.
