By Breaking Belize News Staff (HP): The Government of Belize has directed that the police investigation file on Belizean Ryan Joseph Budna be handed over to the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP).
The move represents an abrupt change of course, as Prime Minister John Briceno confirmed that a previously considered independent investigation has been canceled. The directive to send the file to the DPP came from the Cabinet meeting on October 28, based on legal advice from the Attorney General.
The decision follows heightened public concern over Budna’s disappearance. It is alleged that Budna was abducted and sent to Guatemala, where he had previously escaped from prison.
In a recent interview, Prime Minister Briceno explained his recommendation to Cabinet was to “just pass it on to the DPP and let them deal with it.” He stated the decision was based on the Attorney General’s advice that there is “no law… that we could put a body to investigate” such a matter in Belize.
Instead of a new independent probe, the case will now be reviewed by the DPP, who, as the Prime Minister noted, “directs the police to go back and investigate further, if needed.” This returns the file to the same police department that conducted the initial investigation.
