Report: Guatemalan gun boat aground near Sapodillas

By Aaron Humes: According to Wil Maheia’s PGTV, a Guatemalan gunboat has reportedly run aground on the Belize Barrier Reef near the Sapodilla Cayes.

Further details are not known at this time but we will keep you apprised of the investigation by authorities.

Anecdotal evidence suggests this is the furthest Guatemalan armed forces have made incursions into Belizean, albeit disputed, territory. The Sapodillas are the subject of a three-cornered court case between Belize, Guatemala and Honduras at the International Court of Justice (ICJ), being heard concurrently with Guatemala’s claim to Belizean territory. Oral arguments have still to be set for the case in The Hague, Netherlands.
