By Zoila Palma: The Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of the Congo is continuing to spread, with new regions reporting cases and overall infections increasing, according to the World Health Organization (WHO).
By Thursday, a total of 676 cases had been confirmed, including 136 deaths, WHO official Olivier le Polain said while supporting local authorities in Beni, North Kivu province.
Le Polain noted that the outbreak is reaching additional health zones on a near-daily basis. “Almost every day, cases are being identified in new health zones,” he said. While most cases remain concentrated in Ituri province, he explained that local transmission has now been recorded in both North and South Kivu, where many earlier infections had been linked to people arriving from Ituri.
Health officials say the response is being complicated by ongoing conflict, population displacement, and weaknesses in the healthcare system. Le Polain also warned of “blind spots” in some high-risk areas, making it difficult to determine the true extent of the outbreak. “The full scale of the outbreak is not yet clear,” he added.
Meanwhile, the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) has expressed concern that fear of Ebola is discouraging families from seeking routine medical care.
The agency warned that parents are avoiding health facilities and delaying treatment for sick children, increasing the risk of preventable deaths.
