By Breaking Belize News Staff: The Trinidadian national accused of leaving a Belize City hotel without paying an outstanding bill of more than $11,000 remains on remand after the court declined to offer bail until certain conditions are met.

Rubindra Dale Rampersad, 46, of Princess Town, Trinidad and Tobago, is charged with making off without payment after he allegedly attempted to leave Belize without settling a $11,470.24 bill at Golden Bay Hotel.

Rampersad, who is represented by attorney Darrell Bradley, has pleaded not guilty to the charge.

Bradley informed the Chief Magistrate that he had secured a Belizean surety for Rampersad, but had not yet confirmed a place of abode for his client, whether at a hotel or Airbnb, with advance payment made. The court had indicated that bail could be considered if Rampersad could satisfy several strict conditions, including confirmation of where he would stay while in Belize.

The Chief Magistrate also noted that Rampersad, who has no known ties to Belize, is considered a flight risk. If granted bail, he would not be allowed to leave the country or apply for any travel documents without the court’s permission while the case remains before the court.

Since those concerns were not yet satisfied, Rampersad was further remanded to the Belize Central Prison. The court indicated, however, that the matter could be brought back before the next scheduled date if Bradley is able to address the outstanding bail concerns.

Rampersad is due to reappear in Court #1 on August 3, 2026, when full disclosure is expected to be provided.

Bradley remains optimistic that the matter may be resolved through criminal mediation. The court is open to that possibility, but the prosecution would first need to approach the virtual complainant, Golden Bay Hotel, to determine whether it is willing to proceed through mediation.

According to police allegations, Golden Bay Hotel’s acting manager reported that Rampersad booked a double room at the hotel between May 1 and May 29, 2026, using a credit card. However, the card was allegedly declined several times, and no payment was made despite several extensions to his stay.

On May 29, at around 6:00 a.m., hotel management was reportedly informed that Rampersad had left the premises without settling his bill. Police later detained him pending investigation.

Rampersad was initially denied bail because of his nationality and lack of ties to Belize.
