By Zoila Palma: Last night, the People’s United Party (PUP) held its national manifesto launch in San Ignacio, where Prime Minister John Briceno and his team highlighted the significant achievements under the Plan Belize initiative.
Prime Minister Briceno reminded Belizeans of the dire state the country was in just five years ago, with the United Democratic Party (UDP) leaving government in crisis—borrowing one million dollars a day and facing unsustainable debt.
Under PUP leadership, the country has made significant strides, particularly during the challenging Covid period.
Some key achievements include more than 800 homes built for vulnerable families, with a focus on single mothers and the elderly, offering affordable starter homes at $25 per week.
Free education provided to 3,800 students in 21 high schools, along with free meals, uniforms, and transportation. Other initiatives include free internet and devices for 197 schools.
Significant investments in law enforcement, community policing, and legislation that has led to a decrease in major crime since 2020.
The PUP’s Plan Belize 2.0 is aimed at continuing these efforts, with promises of minimum wage increases, free healthcare under NHI, and free education at Sacred Heart College among other schools.
