By Aaron Humes: Prime Minister-elect John Briceño tonight addressed the nation from Central Park, Orange Walk Town, saying thank you to the electorate for returning his People’s United Party (PUP) to government.
After taking a chance four years with an unproven and untested group, the P.M.-elect says that to be reelected based on their actual performance is validation of that performance. Today’s election reaffirms Belize’s democracy and strengthens resolve.
So celebrate tonight, Briceño told supporters, but remember that the work begins anew tomorrow – more education, healthcare, taming the cost of living, tackling crime and so much more.
To those who think they will have the latitude, even within Government, to flaunt their power in a second term, Briceno says, he will brook no such internal challenge. It will be tough enough as it is to take on external challenges, with less room for error this time around, the Prime Minister noted. Belize must retain stability, protect its gains, prevent hubris and deliver on its promises and goals, he added. The Prime Minister-elect also made sure to thank his family and closest supporters.
The PUP is projected to win 26 seats, including Fort George and Pickstock by walkover, and the various factions of the United Democratic Party (UDP) a collective five.
