By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: Prime Minister John Briceño extended congratulations to U.S. President- elect Donald Trump and said that the Government of Belize wishes him well in his tenure.
“I certainly take the opportunity to congratulate President-elect Donald Trump and as a Government and as a people, we wish him well. He and his administration and we wish him much success because as we joke about it, when the U.S. sneezes, we get cold,” PM Briceño said.
“It’s important for them to have a good economy that is growing so then people would still continue to come to Belize, visit Belize and invest in Belize so we need that to keep going.
That is democracy, the American people decided they want him as the President and so we need to respect that,” he added.
In addition, the Prime Minister thanked U.S. Ambassador Michelle Kwan for her efforts in Belize.
“I firmly believe Michelle Kwan has been one of the most successful ambassadors the U.S. has sent to Belize, she has done exceedingly well, at national and international levels,” PM Briceño expressed.
“She was all across Belize visiting and going to the villages and meeting with the community and NGO’s,” he said.
The Prime Minister also said that through the efforts of Ambassador Kwan, U.S. high level delegations visited Belize.
The Prime Minister also met with the U.S. Secretary of State and the Deputy Director of the CIA during Ambassador Kwan’s tenure in Belize.
Belize and the United States also recently signed the Millennium Challenge Corporation (MCC) which marked a significant milestone with the signing of a 5-year, US$125 million grant agreement.
“The MCC looks at countries around the world with strong democracy and they decided that Belize was one of those countries. They looked at the private sector and saw that we were trying to make the lives of our citizens better. And they saw that within 1 year of Government and decided to meet with us. We did it in 3 years- education and energy and 80% of 120 million will go to education and 20% in energy.
That’s a major accomplishment. No Government in Belize had managed to be picked to sign a compact grant with the U.S. as this MCC grant, so it’s a major accomplishment for us” he explained.
PM Briceño extended well wishes to Ambassador Kwan and encourages her to return to Belize.
