By Zoila Palma: Motorists and commuters in Belize faced higher transportation costs in August 2026, with prices in the transportation category increasing by 11.7 percent compared to August 2025.
The Statistical Institute of Belize (SIB) attributed the increase primarily to higher prices across all types of motor vehicle fuels, along with rising passenger transport costs.
Diesel recorded the largest increase among the fuels listed in the report, rising by $3.19 per gallon from $11.84 in August 2025 to $15.02 in August 2026.
Regular gasoline increased by $2.34 per gallon, moving from $11.82 to $14.16 over the same period.
Premium gasoline prices also climbed, increasing by $1.53 per gallon from $13.21 in August last year to $14.74 in August this year. These increases contributed to the higher transportation costs recorded in the SIB’s monthly Consumer Price Index report.
Passenger transport services became 15.2 percent more expensive compared to August 2025.
The SIB said the increase reflected higher bus and taxi fares, as well as increased international airfares, adding to the transportation expenses faced by Belizean households.
