By Rubén Morales Iglesias: Verdes introduced their entire technical staff on social media on Wednesday, January 4, 2024.
After letting go of Salvadoran coach Angel Orellana, Verdes announced on Wednesday that Spanish coach Tony Hernández had taken over the reins of the Cayo team midway through the current Premier League of Belize 2024-2025 Closing Championship.
Verdes president Lorin Frazer said that as part of a collaboration with Mexican-Italian partners in development, who had promised a professional coaching staff, Hernández would be accompanied by Brazilian-Spanish physical trainer and assistant coach Guilherme Pereira Avelino and Mexican physiotherapist Víctor Hugo Carbajal Salazar. A third person, game (video) analyst and goalkeeper coach Sergio Lelli, should join Verdes within the next two weeks, Frazer said.
Verdes’ technical staff also comprises Assistant Coach Kent Gabourel, Assistant Physiotherapist Paulino Aldana, Assistant Goalkeeper Coach Isaias Franco, and Operations Manager Carlos ‘Cali’ Rodriguez. All of these are Belizeans.

Hernández, Pereira, and Carbajal were presented by Verdes on Monday at a team meeting. Safter that, Hernández and company conducted their first training sessions on Tuesday at the Norman Broaster Stadium in San Ignacio.
After Sunday’s 3-2 loss to Port Layola, Verdes fell from second to third position with nine points from three wins and two losses. They trail Progresso (13 points) and Port Layola (10 points).
The first game under the revamped technical staff will be against Wagiya on Sunday, September 15, at the Carl Ramos Stadium in Dangriga for the beginning of the second round.
Hernández is the third Spanish coach since 2021 when ex-Belize Men’s National Team Head Coach David Pérez was appointed. Orellana replaced Pérez and was in turn relieved by Spanish coach Joé Ángel Migallón for the 2023-2024 Opening Season. Migallón didn’t last long and was again replaced by Orellana for the 2023-2024 Closing Season in January 2024.
