By Rubén Morales Iglesias: Port Layola and Progresso FC are awaiting the Football Federation of Belize’s (FFB) decision for their match to be rescheduled. The Premier League of Belize (PLB) match, originally scheduled for Sunday at the Marion Jones Sports Complex in Belize City, was postponed due to a tragic shooting incident at the venue on Friday night. The incident resulted in the death of one man and left three others injured.
The shooting occurred during the Belize District Football Association (BDFA) semifinals, prompting the postponement of the PLB match by the FFB for safety reasons. The FFB, as the highest football authority in Belize, will have to give the go-ahead for the match to be rescheduled, ensuring fan safety before any game can be played at the Marion Jones Sports Complex.
Despite the postponement, Port Layola remain in second place in the standings, ahead of San Pedro Pirates, who also have six points but trail on goal difference. The rescheduled match may be played ahead of the coming weekend, pending FFB approval.
In other matches, San Pedro Pirates secured a 2-1 victory over Belmopan FC at the Isidoro Beaton Stadium in Belmopan while Verdes triumphed over Wagiya 2-0 at Carl Ramos Stadium in Dangriga.
Verdes have now won their third straight match and lead the championship alone with nine points. San Pedro Pirates recorded their second win of the season, while Belmopan and Wagiya lost their third consecutive game but were more competitive.
