By Rubén Morales Iglesias: Port Layola’s appeal against the Premier League of Belize (PLB) Disciplinary Committee’s decision regarding a nullified offside goal by Verdes in their second round 0-0 draw remains unsettled. Despite the uncertainty, the PLB has opted to proceed with the playoffs while awaiting the Football Federation of Belize (FFB) Appeals Committee’s final ruling, as the club standings will not be affected by the decision.

Contrary to previous reports, Port Layola did not appeal against Verdes regarding a called-off goal in their March 16, 2025 match at Marion Jones Sports Complex. Instead, they challenged the PLB Disciplinary Committee’s jurisdiction, arguing that the committee overstepped its authority by intervening and ordering a replay of the game.

The controversy began when Steven Gentle scored for Verdes in the 89th minute of their second-round clash against Port Layola, only for the goal to be ruled offside. While Verdes did not officially protest the referee’s decision—since referees’ calls are considered final in football—they requested a review. The FFB’s Referees Department upheld the decision, citing the IFAB Laws of the Game, which emphasize that a player’s offside position at the moment a teammate plays the ball is crucial in determining an offside offense.

Sources indicate that, as is standard practice, the Referees Department consulted Concacaf’s FIFA Instructor and Head Assessor, who reviewed the footage and determined that the video evidence was insufficient to overturn the assistant referee’s offside call.

Despite this, the PLB Disciplinary Committee intervened, ruling that the match should be replayed, prompting Port Layola to appeal. The FFB Appeals Committee has yet to issue a ruling.

If the FFB Appeals Committee rules in favor of Port Layola, the standings will remain unchanged.

At this point, the matter is no longer critical for Verdes, as they topped Port Layola in the Road to Concacaf Cumulative Table on goal difference after both clubs finished tied at 44 points. Ironically, a ruling in favor of Port Layola’s appeal would now benefit Verdes.

Conversely, if the FFB Appeals Committee upholds the PLB Disciplinary Committee’s decision, the game would have to be replayed, potentially harming Verdes’ position. A draw or a Verdes win would maintain their advantage, but a Port Layola victory in the rematch would put the reigning champions atop the Cumulative Table, securing their qualification for the Concacaf Central American Cup.

With uncertainty still looming over the unresolved appeal, the PLB playoffs are set to begin this weekend. What’s certain is that the ongoing appeal adds an extra layer of intrigue to the race for Belize’s Concacaf berth, ensuring fans remain on edge as the battle for national glory unfolds.
