By Breaking Belize News Staff (HP): Not even a house of worship was off limits. Police in the Orange Walk District are investigating a burglary at a church compound in Guinea Grass Village, where thieves broke into two buildings and made off with more than $900 in items.

According to the Belize Police Department, the report was made on Wednesday, July 8, 2026, by 49-year-old Hiliberto Santos, a Belizean pastor residing in the village. Santos told police he arrived at his church, Iglesia Cristo Misionera, to find the window of the compound’s kitchen building open. On checking, he realised someone had forced the window with excessive force, damaging and bending the latch from within.

The damage did not stop there. The pastor reported that the Sunday school building was also hit, with both doors found wide open and a wooden louver window removed where the intruder gained access. He believes the break-ins happened sometime between Monday night and the early hours of Tuesday morning. Neither building has cameras installed, and the pastor told police he could not imagine who would target the church, saying he holds no malice against anyone in the village.

The list of stolen and damaged items paints a picture of a thorough sweep. From the kitchen, plates, spoons, forks and cups, a 100-foot extension cord, four buckets, and a set of five stainless steel pots were taken. From the Sunday school building, the losses included the damaged window, two broken padlocks, a tin of paint, a curtain, a fan, and four chairs. The total value of the missing and damaged property came to $922, and the pastor has requested court action.

Scenes of crime personnel processed and photographed the compound, and the area was canvassed. Police have identified persons of interest, and the matter remains under investigation. No arrests have been made, and a search connected to the inquiry reportedly turned up nothing.

Anyone with information on the burglary is encouraged to contact the nearest police station or Crime Stoppers at 922.
