By Horace Palacio: The National Hurricane Center (NHC) has issued its latest Tropical Weather Outlook, which includes the potential development of a weather system in the northwestern Caribbean Sea that could impact Belize in the coming days.
A broad area of low pressure currently situated over the western Caribbean Sea and parts of Central America is showing early signs of gradual development. Although the system is still disorganized, conditions are expected to become more favorable for it to strengthen over the next several days as it moves slowly northward. This system could develop into a tropical depression as it approaches the Gulf of Mexico later in the week. Regardless of whether the system forms into a tropical depression, it is expected to bring heavy rainfall to Central America, including Belize, which could result in localized flooding in certain areas.
Currently, the chance of formation within the next 48 hours is low at 10%, but the likelihood increases significantly to 70% over the next seven days.
Another low-pressure system located southeast of Bermuda in the central subtropical Atlantic shows a minimal chance of development, and a tropical wave moving westward from the west coast of Africa may develop later in the week. However, neither of these systems poses a direct threat to Belize at this time.
With the potential for heavy rains and flooding, residents and visitors in Belize are advised to stay updated on weather forecasts and take necessary precautions. Breaking Belize News will continue to monitor the situation closely.
