By Rubén Morales Iglesias: In a solemn and emotional farewell, over 250,000 mourners gathered in St. Peter’s Square to honor Pope Francis during his Requiem Mass, with thousands more lining Rome’s streets as his coffin was taken in procession, Vatican News reported. Cardinal Giovanni Battista Re, presiding over the ceremony, reflected on Pope Francis’ 12-year pontificate, marked by his closeness to the people, emphasis on mercy, and unwavering commitment to the marginalized.
“The final image we have of him, which will remain etched in our memory, is that of last Sunday, Easter Sunday, when Pope Francis, despite his serious health problems, wanted to give us his blessing from the balcony of Saint Peter’s Basilica. He then came down to this Square to greet the large crowd gathered for the Easter Mass while riding in the open-top Popemobile,” Cardinal Re said.
Cardinal Re highlighted Pope Francis’ deep love for an open and inclusive Church and his pastoral vision, inspired by Saint Francis of Assisi. He noted the Pope’s advocacy for peace, environmental stewardship, and his bold voice during times of global conflict. The homily emphasized the late Pope’s legacy as a shepherd of the people, his focus on evangelization, and his impactful global outreach, including visits to Iraq and regions in need.
The service concluded with Cardinal Re’s tender request for Pope Francis to intercede from heaven, leaving the crowd with the heartfelt words: “Dear Francis, we now ask you to pray for us.”
