By Breaking Belize News Staff: Police believe gang activity may have been behind the shooting of 26-year-old Tafaree Sanchez, who was attacked by an armed individual in Belize City on Thursday.
According to Assistant Superintendent of Police Stacy Smith, the incident occurred shortly before noon on October 29, when officers on patrol heard gunshots in the vicinity of Periwinkle Street.
Investigators established that Sanchez was standing near the intersection of Periwinkle and Poinsettia Streets when an armed individual approached and fired several shots in his direction, injuring him.
Sanchez was transported for medical treatment and is reportedly in stable condition.
Smith confirmed that investigators believe the attack may have been gang-related, although police have not disclosed the circumstances leading up to the shooting or identified any suspects.
The incident was among three shootings reported in Belize City on Thursday morning, including the murder of 19-year-old Dodrick Madrill on Freedom Street and another shooting that injured 19-year-old Troydon Conorquie near a basketball court on Wagner’s Lane.
Despite the close timing of the incidents, Smith said police have not established any clear connection between the attacks.
The violence follows another shooting reported by BBN on October 28, in which 20-year-old Michael Casires and a 17-year-old minor were injured on Cairo Street. Police had previously indicated that they were monitoring increased criminal activity in that area.
Investigations into the shooting of Sanchez remain ongoing.
