Police Street resident remanded for gang membership and contempt of court

By Breaking Belize News Staff: Cameron Kareem Williams, a 21-year-old resident of Police Street, spent his first night on remand on Tuesday night after being charged with two criminal offenses. Williams appeared before a Magistrate in Court #5 of the Belize City Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday afternoon, facing charges of being a member of a gang and contempt of a judicial order.

Allegations against Williams suggest his involvement with the gang “Bank ah Land crips” in serious offenses. It is further alleged that Williams failed to comply with a court order to report to the Queen Street Police Station every Friday, following his bail for firearm-related offenses granted on July 17, 2023.

Despite pleading not guilty, the nature of the gang membership charge, falling under the Crimes Control Criminal & Justice Act, prevented the Magistrate from offering bail. Williams was remanded to the Belize Central Prison until July 9, 2024.

Williams claimed to have signed in on three different Fridays, but the Magistrate advised him that explanations would be reserved for trial proceedings.
