By Breaking Belize News Staff (HP): Police are investigating the death of 45-year-old Oscar Genaro Flota following a violent confrontation on Caye Caulker that left him with a fatal head injury.
According to Police Staff Officer ASP Stacy Smith, the incident occurred around 8:25 p.m. on Saturday, June 13. Investigators have learned that Flota was socializing with a group of men when an argument reportedly escalated into a physical altercation.
During the confrontation, Flota was struck in the head with a shovel.
He was transported for medical treatment but later succumbed to his injuries.
Police are currently seeking one male suspect in connection with the incident.
ASP Smith explained that the case is presently being treated as a death investigation rather than a murder investigation while officials continue to gather evidence and determine the circumstances surrounding the altercation.
According to Smith, investigators must establish whether there was an intention to kill or whether the incident may have involved self-defense before deciding on the appropriate criminal charges.
“The indication that we have received so far from the statements on file suggests there was a physical altercation,” Smith explained. She added that investigators are examining whether excessive force was used and whether there was any intent to cause fatal harm.
Police also confirmed that alcohol consumption was involved, with members of the group reportedly drinking before the dispute occurred.
The investigation remains ongoing as officials work to determine exactly what led to the deadly confrontation and whether criminal charges will be filed.
