Police say internal gang conflict behind Dodrick Madrill murder; surveillance technology helped identify suspects

By Breaking Belize News Staff: Police believe the murder of 19-year-old Dodrick Madrill on Freedom Street in Belize City was the result of an internal gang conflict, as investigators reveal that surveillance technology played a major role in identifying the suspects.

Assistant Superintendent of Police Stacy Smith provided the update during Sunday’s emergency briefing.

Madrill was murdered on Thursday, October 29, when a gunman opened fire on him while he was walking along Freedom Street.

Police have since jointly charged 31-year-old Emerson West and a 16-year-old boy with murder.

Smith revealed that the investigation was significantly advanced through footage captured by the Crime Fusion and Operations Centre, which recorded both the incident and its aftermath.

She explained that investigators believe Madrill’s murder resulted from an internal dispute within a particular gang.

Police also confirmed that only one individual discharged a firearm during the attack, although both accused persons have been charged with murder.

Smith declined to elaborate on the alleged roles of the two accused, explaining that the evidence would be presented during court proceedings.

Madrill’s murder preceded Friday’s Coastal Plain Highway quadruple homicide, which police have also attributed to an internal gang feud.

Two of the highway murder victims, Robert Gladden and Dayton Palacio, had previously faced firearm charges alongside Madrill in February 2025.

Police have not conclusively established whether the two murder investigations are directly connected.

West and the minor are presumed innocent unless proven guilty in court.
