By Breaking Belize News Staff: Police say all persons who worked at the relevant Crime Investigation Branch (CIB) office were interviewed as part of the investigation into the disappearance of $21,000 connected to a police exhibit-money matter.
The issue was raised during Monday’s police press briefing, where reporters asked about the money reportedly connected to attorney Oscar Selgado.
ASP Stacy Smith said everyone who worked at that CIB office was interviewed as part of the investigation. She did not provide names of any officers who may have been transferred or disciplined.
According to reports, a police audit found the missing cash may never have officially reached the Queen Street Police Station exhibit-room vault. According to that report, investigators found no official record showing the money was deposited into the vault after being confiscated during a 2023 criminal investigation, shifting focus back to the Belize City CIB office.
The audit reportedly raised concerns about evidence handling, chain-of-custody procedures, and who last had physical possession of the funds.
Police have not announced any criminal charges in relation to the missing money.
