By Aaron Humes: Director of Civil Aviation Nigel Carter confirmed that police officers are now in place at all airstrips nationwide as security following the dramatic Holy Thursday hijacking of a Tropic Air flight, which ended in death for the hijacker.

A private company has been contracted by the Belize Airports Authority (BAA) and is training security officers to boost presence.

Firearms are prohibited from being carried aboard aircrafts and must be declared before boarding. A public awareness campaign is being created and signage to indicate do’s and don’ts will be improved, Carter said.

Carter advises that an hour’s time is required to be present before flight time to avoid delays due to upgraded security measures.

Passengers will be screened and baggage checked and interviewed concerning what they carry. Metal detectors and other security measures will be gradually introduced and infrastructure improved, including new aerodromes, and more training will be available.
