Police Exhibit Keeper to be tried for willful oppression in High Court

By Aaron Humes: Following a preliminary inquiry, 39-year-old Mario Bustillos, a resident of Orange Walk Town, Orange Walk District, must stand trial at the June session of the High Court on a single charge of willful oppression.

Bustillos became the central figure in an incident of alleged cannabis poisoning caused by marijuana-laced candies that were distributed by persons unknown in April of 2023, ultimately affecting 14 persons.

However, Bustillos saw ten counts of negligent harm withdrawn after laced weed gummies he allegedly disposed of made their way into the streets, causing injuries to several minors which landed them in hospital.

Bustillos was committed to trial following the submission of 47 statements that formed sufficient evidence to pursue the charge according to the presiding Magistrate.

Bustillos was released on a new bail of $7,000 plus two sureties of $3,500 which he met a little after 12 this afternoon.

He is accused of, on April 21, 2023, acting in excess of his authority as Exhibit Keeper for the Belize Police Department when he improperly disposed of cannabis-infused candies labeled as found property that resulted in injury of the public, namely 14 persons in Belize City.

At the inquiry, Bustillos was represented by attorney Nazira Myles-Espat.
