By Breaking Belize News Staff: Prime Minister John Briceño says the Auditor General will make recommendations on whether public officers involved in questionable payment processes should face suspension or other action.
Reporters asked whether officials involved in processing split payments connected to the Mira procurement controversy should be placed on suspension. Briceño said he does not yet know and that the Auditor General must complete the review and make recommendations.
The Office of the Prime Minister announced on June 22 that Oscar Mira had requested to be relieved of Cabinet duties while the Auditor General conducts a three-month audit into procurement processes related to his time at the Ministry of Defence. Julius Espat was appointed interim Minister of Home Affairs.
Briceño told reporters that he can deal directly with ministers, but the audit will determine what should happen with other officials. He said Mira called him before the meeting and said he believed it was best for him to step back for 90 days while the audit proceeds.
The Prime Minister rejected the suggestion that the matter had created a crisis for his administration, saying Cabinet has 26 members and Government’s work continues.
