By Rubén Morales Iglesias: The Premier League of Belize’s 2025–2026 season continues to deliver weekly upheaval. After five rounds of action, Verdes FC now stand alone at the top, capitalizing on Progresso’s unexpected 2–1 loss to Wagiya — a result that not only dethroned the northern leaders but also marked Wagiya’s first win of the season.
Verdes edged Belmopan FC 1–0 in a disciplined display, extending their unbeaten run to four matches and climbing to 8 points with a league-best +8 goal difference. Their defensive record remains flawless, and their ability to win tight fixtures has set them apart in a season defined by parity.
Progresso, previously the sole leaders, faltered in Dangriga as Wagiya finally broke through. The southern club had struggled in earlier rounds but found form at the right moment, stunning Progresso 2-1 and lifting themselves off the bottom with 4 points from five matches.
Belmopan, now third with 7 points, couldn’t find a way past Verdes and will look to rebound this coming weekend. Napoles FC, who rested this round, remain fourth on 7 points with a -1 goal differential.
Port Layola and Capital Sport Club played to a 2–2 draw, a result that keeps Port mid-table with 5 points and gives Capital their first point of the campaign. Though still winless, Capital showed improved structure and attacking intent after a string of heavy defeats.
Five Weeks, Five Leaders
With Verdes now atop the standings, the PLB has seen a different club lead the table each week — a rare level of competitiveness that has kept fans guessing. The fixture imbalance adds further intrigue, with some clubs having played five matches while others have only four.
As Week 6 approaches, Verdes will aim to hold their position for more than a week — something no club has managed so far. Meanwhile, Wagiya’s resurgence and Progresso’s stumble have added new layers to a season that refuses to settle.
