Dr Martinez posted on his official social media on Monday, “In Collaboration with NICH we will honor the legacy of an Icon of the south by building a monument for the legendary Andy Palacio.”
The proposed monument will likely be situated in Barranco, Palacio’s home village in the Toledo District, an area deeply connected to the artist’s roots. Known for his pivotal role in the paranda and punta music movement, Andy Palacio gained international recognition for his efforts in highlighting the rich traditions of Garifuna music, transforming it into a global phenomenon.
This initiative is part of a broader cultural campaign designed to enrich the community, which also includes the establishment of a House of Culture in Punta Gorda.
Since Palacio’s passing in 2008, his influence has been felt throughout the nation, inspiring many to embrace and celebrate their cultural heritage.
