Placencia not waiting on government as beach erosion worsens ahead of high season

By Breaking Belize News Staff (HP): Placencia’s village leaders say they cannot afford to wait any longer for action on beach erosion.

Village Council Chairman Warren Garbutt said the push came from business owners and property owners frustrated that nothing was being done. That pressure led to a meeting last Friday where the council shared its discussions with central government and other agencies.

Garbutt was careful to say the move is not a criticism of government.

“It’s not something against the government, it’s not where we feel the government is doing nothing. There is definitely a very slow response to actually addressing the issue in very short term measures,” he said.

Stakeholders made it clear that short term fixes need to start before tourists arrive in a few weeks.

The council’s plan focuses on replenishing the beach. A recent erosion study recommended beach nourishment, pumping eroded sand back onto the shore, as the fastest and most affordable option. Sand may also be trucked in from other areas of the peninsula and further north.

Garbutt said sargassum has caused the worst erosion Placencia has seen in years.

The issue is a national concern. Prime Minister John Briceño recently sought World Bank support of about $20 million to help Belize tackle sargassum.
