By Zoila Palma: Today, King Charles III has described the transatlantic slave trade as a “shameful chapter” in history that “fills my heart with horror,” during an address to Commonwealth leaders in Antigua and Barbuda.
The King made the remarks while formally opening the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM), acknowledging the suffering and injustice associated with Britain’s role in the slave trade.
The monarch referred to slavery as one of history’s “most monstrous injustices” and expressed what he described as profound personal sorrow.
He also recognized the efforts that eventually brought an end to the international slave trade, noting the leading role played by the Royal Navy. However, despite his strong remarks, the King stopped short of issuing a direct apology for Britain’s involvement or addressing reparations.
The speech marked some of the King’s most extensive public comments on Britain’s historical role in the transatlantic slave trade, BBC reports.
His remarks come amid continued calls from Caribbean and other Commonwealth nations for Britain to acknowledge its history and address the lasting consequences of slavery.
Beyond the legacy of slavery, King Charles highlighted several global challenges facing the Commonwealth, including armed conflicts, the impacts of climate change and the rapid transformation of societies through technology.
