By Breaking Belize News Staff: A bartender is under medical care after a violent altercation at the Otherside in Placencia Village on Monday night left several people injured, including one man who was reportedly held underwater in the lagoon.
According to police, officers responded to reports of a stabbing shortly after 9:30 p.m. at the establishment. Upon arrival, they found David Dorian Jones, 41, a bartender of Placencia Village, unconscious aboard a boat vessel and experiencing difficulty breathing.
Initial investigations indicate that the disturbance began when Kelly Ical, 23, of Sunset Pointe Road, allegedly confronted Araceli Aguilar, 42, of Amara Avenue, Belize City, over claims that Aguilar had been interacting flirtatiously with Ical’s common-law partner, Devaney Tillet, 29, of Sunset Pointe Road.
Police say the confrontation escalated when Ical allegedly broke a Landshark pint bottle over Aguilar’s head, causing injuries to her head and left cheek. During the ensuing struggle, Aguilar reportedly fell into a pool.
Investigators say Tillet then approached Ical and allegedly punched, choked, and kicked her several times. At that point, Jones reportedly intervened in Ical’s defense. During the confrontation, Jones allegedly used a conch shell to strike Tillet in the face, causing injuries to his upper lip and forehead.
The fight then spilled into the nearby lagoon, where police say Tillet allegedly held Jones underwater, causing him to swallow water and later experience severe breathing difficulties.
Bystanders at the scene reportedly intervened and managed to separate those involved before the situation worsened.
All four persons — Tillet, Ical, Jones, and Aguilar — were issued medico forms and taken under police escort to the Placencia Polyclinic for treatment.
Later that same night, Jones was transferred to the Dangriga Southern Regional Hospital after he began coughing blood and continued having trouble breathing.
The matter remains under investigation.
