: Unofficial results from the Elections and Boundaries Department say the People’s United Party has won eight of nine municipal councils in Wednesday’s elections.

The PUP retained Corozal, Orange Walk, San Pedro, Belize City, Belmopan, Benque Viejo, Dangriga, and Punta Gorda while losing the Twin Towns to the United Democratic Party (UDP)’s Earl Trapp with six members to one.

On Wednesday evening, Ladrick “Mad Bull” Shephard and his team of seven were the first to be officially and comfortably returned as members of the Orange Walk Town Council.

Shephard emerged at the front of La Inmaculada Primary School, where votes were counted, and promised to continue the council’s work in the Sugar City.

Prime Minister and area representative for Orange Walk Central John Briceño joined the party, telling reporters that this victory continues the Party’s run started under Kevin Bernard in 2012.

He added that the party was confident of winning elsewhere but appeared to concede San Ignacio/Santa Elena, saying the PUP will not go back on their pre-election promises of work in the Twin Towns.

But he aimed a dig at the Opposition by suggesting that their voters stayed at home while the PUPs came out to vote and that this was the difference on a day of average turnout.

National voter turnout stands at 57.47 percent, with Orange Walk Town finishing with 64 percent turnout, while Dangriga’s was lowest at just over 51 percent. Belize City had a 54 percent voter turnout.
